Why as a professional trained PCV/PSV bus driver or LGV truck/lorry driver in London a higher standard of driving is demanded of you?

Driving a large vehicle such as a bus or a truck is a huge responsibility. Unlike driving a car, a much more level of skills and concentration is required. Also as a professional, trained driver a much superior standard of driving is demanded of you by authorities such as Driving Standard Agency, Transport for London and the public.

Most car drivers are only thinking and seeing as far as the car in front of them.

As a driver of large vehicle, you must look 10 vehicles ahead, or as far as you can see. Most car owners react to situation at the last minute. Unfortunately, as a professional bus driver, truck or lorry driver you cannot afford to drive safely in this manner.

You must check ahead to see what other drivers are likely to do, i.e. if there is someone waiting to cross the road, there is a strong possibility of the lights changing to red and the driver in front slams the brakes. As a professional London Bus driver or a truck/lorry driver you should allow a big gap so that you can brake gently and safely. As a bus driver in London, you have the most precious cargo in the world, your passengers. As a truck driver, you may have cargo that would endanger lives if you had to brake suddenly last minute.

In conclusion, you must anticipate the road conditions, behaviour of other drivers and pedestrians and act accordingly whilst remaining calm and polite always.
